Analysing the behaviour of captain de koster using structure and agency debate free essay sample

Structure and office banter gives a comprehension of the activities and perspectives of a person. This article will be basically examining and talking about the disposition and activities of Captain Louis De Koster and how structure-organization discussion can assist us with getting them. It will additionally proceed to unload the impact that basic or organization factors has on De Koster in the police division. Structure is the system of repeating designs wherein individuals act in routine circumstances (Van huyssteen, E. 2003). In addition; it comprises of social elements and establishments that impact the individual’s ability to act, for example, family, tutoring, religion, economy and sets of standards and qualities. (Van huyssteen, E. 2003). Organization is the capacity of a person, to act and settle on decisions about what occurs in their live just as to comprehend nature they are in(Van huyssteen, E. 2003). The structure-office banter contends and questions if the choices made by people are truly what they need or if it’s impacted by society and its organizations. We will compose a custom exposition test on Investigating the conduct of commander de koster utilizing structure and office banter or then again any comparative subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page As indicated by Giddens, the discussion can be diverged from the â€Å"nature versus nurture† banter, which addresses whether a person’s physiology (â€Å"nature†) or socialization (â€Å"nurture†) prevails in the development of a character, since structure-organization discussion might be comprehended as an issue of socialization against self-sufficiency in deciding if an individual goes about as a free operator or in a way directed by social structure. In this concentrate, we can comprehend the antagonism towards police work brought about by structure. Chief Louis is continually griping and reprimanding the police administration since it is to a greater extent a standard in his workplace. â€Å" the procedure had likewise instructed me that griping was a piece of the hierarchical culture of the criminologist administration. † (Altbeker, A. 2005:169). De Koster uncovered his negative activities coming about because of structure and its perspectives, for example, race, sex governmental issues and rebuilding of police work. His mentality was for the most part repudiating with his activities since, he show responsibility in what he does, he despite everything plays out his obligations in the police administration despite the fact that he portray it as being severe, â€Å"half the time you imagine that administration figures it would be better in the event that you gathered your packs and screwed off† (Altbeker, A. 2005: ). His demeanor portrays prejudice since he believes that politically-sanctioned racial segregation is rehashing itself however its opposite this time-none of the advancement presents would be given on a white criminologist. Dominant part of the cops in the police administration were given high situations without being prepared and that truly driven De Koster mad in light of the fact that he saw it being a racial separation, thusly it influenced the manner in which he played out his work-which made him not to have companions at work on account of the racial contrasts (that didn't prevent him from going to work however). In spite of the fact that his mentality was of bigotry, he anyway demonstrated committed to his work and needed to get positive outcomes since he realized that society expect police officers to carry out their responsibilities proficiently. He was negative and self-important on the grounds that he felt unwanted in his workplace, as they didn't need him around. Besides, his pride about being a cop was blurring endlessly day by day, in actuality it was gone in light of the fact that they used to focus on it his face, disclosing to him that he enjoys being a police and he is negative. The police had a type of a deception about how being a police officer isn't just about the cash and the vocation, â€Å" I was pondering what De Koster had enlightened me regarding his thwarted expectation with policing as a profession, and with the police administration as his boss. His perspectives were a reverberation of crying and teeth-grinding that I experienced among investigators particularly white criminologists † (Altbeker,A. 2005:176). This shows his activities were affected by structure in light of the fact that despite the fact that he loathed the framework in the police administration he simply needed to consent since he needed to carry out his responsibility and satisfy his desires as a cop. What's more he had to stay in the police administration since he thought about the joblessness rates out there. Structure compelled him to act so that will be reasonable and designed between the components of society, in this way it made a superseding effect on his activities. Despite the fact that de Koster was on about how the association was self-destructing, he was consistently there. He settled on a decision of staying with the association and followed up on his decisions in light of the fact that despite the fact that the climate was troublesome (when it was coming down and cold); he settled on a decision of carrying out his responsibility. He was in Hillbrow searching for a suspect-John Sithole, rather than being at home dozing. This demonstrates despite the fact that he settled on decisions, his activities were affected by society’s desire from now on this is structure. With the end goal for him to settle on feeling of his activities and decisions, he thought of duty â€Å"†¦you must comprehend that since I come to work, doesn’t imply that I accomplish the work. Do it like I used to, I mean. In this game you must be resolved to do it appropriately, yet the responsibility isn’t there anymore† (Altbeker, A. 2005:173). His work is extremely essential to him. Despite the fact that he felt miserable and undesirable, he gave it his everything to remain thoughtful and faithful to the police administration. He was truly committed to his work and in that sense, we comprehended his organization when he took the man from Berea aside, to disclose to him that it is so essential to support the police and how he would by and by put in a case for a prize. He settled on that decision since he truly needed to discover John Sithole. He additionally settled on a decision of remaining cheerful and trusting in getting the miscreants out there. This can be seen when the columnist was asking him whether he figured the man would help on the off chance that he discovered John Sithole and De Koster’s answer was â€Å"we can dare to dream, marvels do happen† (Altbeker, A. 2005:177). His inspirational mentality towards his work existed in spite of the unpleasant and horrible working conditions. He generally demonstrated duty in any event, when he was relied upon to be sad and despondent, moreover he remained at work and acted expertly around his partners despite the fact that they were not getting along a result of racial contrasts - this is a sign of office. Exchange of both structure and organization can be seen on the activities of this cop. He went into another man’s home and stood up to him in his clothing before his kids, bulling him with the authority of the law and removing him. This is a standard in the police division so De Koster’s activities were affected by structure for this situation. He did what he needed to do basically on the grounds that he was required to. I for one remain with structure in the structure-organization banter in light of the fact that despite the fact that office exists, it is still affected by structure. The decisions we make are by one way or another impacted by what we see, hear and read about (society and its desires). De Koster’s activities and decisions were molded by social variables in his workplace. Indeed he settled on decisions, yet his activities coming about because of those decisions were impacted by structure. End From the previously mentioned I in this manner finish up by concurring with Giddens (1979) that one can't not pick among structure and office, in light of the fact that â€Å"they are commonly dependant to one another as opposed to restricted. Structures are not severe of the individual’s ability to act, or organization, but instead give a methods by which people act and are additionally the result of those activities. † (Abercrombie et al, 1988: 245 in Van huyssteen, E. 2003:57).

How UPS Delivers Objective Performance Appraisals Essay

Official Summary: In the examination underneath you will find out about UPS and how they convey target execution evaluations. You will increase a comprehension of how the execution of PDAs has normalized their assessment procedure. It will additionally clarify why UPS isn't a people-focused organization, how they consolidate the basic episodes examination strategy, the lawfully solidness of their assessment program, how they don’t cross the slender line among oversight and â€Å"snoopervision† and what they can do to improve their driver assessment program. Foundation: For the United Parcel Service (UPS) deciding whether objectivity is precisely being utilized during an audit is a troublesome procedure yet a significant one. The usage of individual computerized aides (PDAs) has guaranteed the utilization of objectivity by normalizing the assessment procedure through programming. During surveys chiefs direct ride-alongs with their representatives to guarantee systems and approaches are being followed. Before the presentation of companywide agendas through the PDAs there was no chance to get of knowing whether each worker was accepting a similar assessment and being assessed on a similar scale. PDAs have enabled chiefs to remain reached to things, for example, email while rapidly recognizing preparing needs and permitting access to preparing assets. UPS has seen the upsides of PDAs and will keep on placing more in the field as they guarantee objectivity and give a strong structure to worker assessments. Investigation: As indicated by (Kreitner and Cassidy, 2008) on page 273 Jeffrey Pfeffer found an association between individuals focused practices, higher benefits, and lower worker turnover. He likewise recognized seven individuals focused practices three of which straightforwardly identify with this case. The main practice is representative strengthening through decentralization and self-guided groups. Decentralization as indicated by (Kreitner and Cassidy, 2008)on page 254 is â€Å"management’s sharing of dynamic authority with lower-level employees.† For this situation UPS has concluded that managers rather than upperâ management, for example, HR would direct ride-alongs to assess how well their representatives are performing and following techniques. The subsequent practice is sharing of key data. With the execution of PDAs administrators are constantly associated with email and other significant assets. The PDAs have made the assessment procedure increasingly uniform all through the organization and enable directors to rapidly move data when they return to the workplace. The third practice is exhaustive preparing. Directors can utilize the PDAs in the field to walk representatives through applied techniques and distinguish preparing needs. Albeit three of the seven individuals focused practices identify with this case as per Pfeffer the seven practices are a coordinated bundle that ought not be executed piecemeal and thus he would not call UPS a people-focused organization. As indicated by (Kreitner and Cassidy, 2008) on page 280 execution evaluation is â€Å"evaluating work execution as a reason for staff decisions.† Based on the data for the situation UPS is utilizing the basic occurrences method. The basic episodes strategy referenced in (Kreitner and Cassidy, 2008) on page 281 states, â€Å"Specific cases of substandard and unrivaled execution are archived by the manager when they occur.† By directing ride-alongs with the representatives directors are in an ideal circumstance to satisfy the prerequisites of this procedure. The PDAs with the agendas which are the equivalent and utilized by everybody all through the organization guarantee workers are being assessed on similar methodology and arrangements and that managers are utilizing a similar assessment scale when deciding employment execution. To stay away from legitimate activity while assessing an employee’s execution as per (Kreitner and Cassidy, 2008) on page 280 bosses need to put together their examination frameworks with respect to the accompanying four models, work investigation, conduct arranged, explicit composed guidelines, and checked on results. UPS with the execution of PDAs has plainly fulfille d these prerequisites. Preloaded programming has transformed the assessment procedure into a standard strategy while recognizing and sketching out the particular assignments and abilities required for a worker to be effective. A progression of agendas portraying in detail the employee’s obligations enable chiefs to unbiasedly rate singular execution regardless of who is giving the assessment or where it is occurring. During an assessment if a representative isn't following methods administrators can show them in theâ field the best possible way it should be finished. After the assessment the administrator has everything expected to give direct criticism and proposals to the worker so they have an away from of how they are getting along and how execution can be improved. Snoopervision is an administration style including spying and meddlesome practices. In light of this definition UPS doesn't cross the slight line among oversight and snoopervision. Ride-alongs by directors are regular practice and the best marker of an employee’s execution. The execution of PDAs have just given the worker a reasonable possibility at accepting a genuine assessment dependent on how they preform by normalizing the assessment procedure companywide. For most workers in the U.S. a developing worry of their boss investigating their shoulder and disregarding their entitlement to security is turning out to be incre asingly more apparent as innovation advances. On account of UPS this shouldn’t be a worry on the grounds that the execution of innovation isn't being utilized to spy or to actualize meddlesome practices yet to appropriately prepare and protect workers while preforming their activity. In the wake of perusing the case I think the execution of the PDAs have significantly improved the driver assessment program. PDAs offer a companywide normalized assessment process with simple access to data required to appropriately assess, train, and offer input to representatives. Pushing ahead a concentrated exertion by upper administration should be put on ensuring the representatives are holding and moving data gave to them during the assessment procedure to the activity. They ought to likewise get input from their workers on how they saw the assessment program, on the off chance that they picked up the information and abilities planned, and if any enhancements are being made. Actualizing post-assessment studies and tests would fill in as brisk and simple pointers for administrators if representatives are really learning and understanding the data they are accepting through the assessment program. Experiences/ Suggestions: Inquiring about this case has given me a superior comprehension of how significant the seven individuals focused practices are to an association and why just 12 percent of associations are right now considered individuals focused. It has made me fully aware of the exhibition examination procedure and how significant it is for bosses to guarantee lawful solidness of their evaluations. Acquiringâ knowledge and data from representatives is the way to appropriately increasing a comprehension of how well an assessment procedure is functioning and if any progressions should be made. Pushing ahead UPS essentially needs to keep actualizing strategies and arrangements that guarantee the utilization of objectivity during worker assessments. Bosses need to completely comprehend these systems and approaches and ensure they keep on assessing dependent on the rules recorded in the agendas. Guaranteeing legitimate maintenance and move of information to the activity will be a continuous procedure a nd ought to be assessed by ride-alongs with the utilization of post preparing overviews and tests. For progress to proceed in the association correspondence alongside state-of-the-art assets are critical and it will be the obligation of upper administration to ensure both include a solid nearness inside the association. .

Three Steps To Start a New Business Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Three Steps To Start a New Business - Term Paper Example During times, for example, this, little fires up organizations are advantaged in light of the fact that the open doors in a downturn are various (Bradberry, 2011). Be that as it may, initial step business people ought to follow three stages. These are making the business personality, enlisting the business, and subsidizing the endeavor. The initial step includes refining the business thought. While most business visionaries are adhered in considering how to start, just considering starting a business is the start. What business visionaries must battle with is that there will consistently be difficulties in beginning a business (Ready, 2011). So as to be effective now, the business visionary must characterize the idea of their business. The business visionary should settle on a choice on the type of business they will make. This can be a constrained organization, an association, or a sole-ownership, the least complex of which is sole-ownership. Now, do what you know. Consider your pas t activities as far as the manner in which you can change them into items and administrations. There are three fundamental perspectives here. One ought to imitate what others have done, do what feels best for one’s circumstance, and expect to take care of a typical issue. Moreover, the strategy should be taken a shot at completely now. This will help the business person in picking up certainty, center, and lucidity (Butler, 2008). In a sole enterprise, the business visionary will have individual risk for the business’ obligation, in spite of the fact that he/she will win all the benefit. Sole ownership is generally cheap with low development costs, just as not documenting accounts or have them reviewed by government-authorize organizations (Butler, 2008). On the off chance that an individual is ready to go with another business visionary, at that point the people can frame an association. For this situation, both will be mutually at risk for obligations accumulated as accomplices. Tax assessment is done independently for each accomplice; while this type of entrepreneurs can have constrained obligation with the end goal of obligations. Associations likewise have increasingly formal structures when contrasted with a sole ownership. These must be enlisted with the pertinent government organization. They could likewise choose to frame a LLC, where case their risk is constrained to what number of offers the individual business visionary has purchased. This is the most costly with enrollment and record costs, available benefits, and separate tax collection for each of the entrepreneur’s profits and compensation (Butler, 2008). In the wake of giving a personality to the business, he/she needs to begin, the business visionary should then proceed onward to the administrative and legitimate prerequisites that they require to satisfy. To start with, they should enlist with an administration organization for the motivations behind the national protect ion, charge, and their PAYE installments (Broad, 2012). What's more, the business visionary should get a VAT enrollment PIN. With respect to VAT, the administration has different plans for various business visionaries. On the off chance that one decides to be a piece of an association, at that point the individual in question should redistribute to a bookkeeping association. This is significant for security of each accomplice in the event of risk claims. These bookkeepers are prepared and guaranteed with proficient capabilities out in the open records. The decision of bookkeeping firm will be significant comparable to the idea of the business since each bookkeeping firm has a one of a kind method for part

Why is SAT Reading different from other kinds of reading

The kind of reading the SAT asks you to do is probably unlike any other kind of reading youve ever been asked to do. Its almost certainly different from the kind of interpretive reading youre asked to do in English class. For starters, the SAT is a test about arguments, not a test about literature, and your own personal interpretation of the texts you are asked to read matters not one little bit. In fact, the only thing that matters is the authors intention: what point she/he is attempting to make in a given piece of writing and, just as importantly, how she/he conveys that point by using specific words, argument structures, and rhetorical strategies (such as metaphor, analogy, anecdote, repetition, etc.) The skill that the SAT requires is therefore something I like to call rhetorical reading. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, and reading rhetorically simply means that you are reading primarily to determine the point of the passage and the function that various words, phrases, and pieces of information play within it (Do they support the point, or do they contradict it? Do they emphasize an idea or question it? Strengthen it or cast doubt on it?) Everything else is more or less irrelevant. And contrary to what the College Board would have you think, reading this way is an acquirable skill, not an innate ability. It just takes some getting used to.

The Process Of Memory Affect Us On A Daily Basis - 2011 Words

Introduction The notion of an episodic and semantic memory as part of a category of memory is one that is one that has had copious amounts of research and is a mental phenomenon in which information is encoded, stored and retrieved. The process of memory affects every aspect of our daily lives and has led to much neurological and cognitive research, as well as behavioural and psychoanalytical, amongst other theories, and an equivalent amount of research has been spent into finding out the extent of how damages to processes of memory affect us on a daily basis. Failure of memory can normally result from failure to adequately store the memory in the first place, failure to retain the information and failure to retrieve the information later on. Neuro-imaging studies using techniques such as MRI and post-mortem work have shown that structural abnormalities in brain regions such as the frontal lobes, amygdala and cerebellum and also lesioning of the hippocampus in a connectionist model results in a s imilar temporal gradient in memory retrieval to that seen in amnesic patients with hippocampal damage (Alvarez and Squire, 1994). The distinctions between areas of memory is complex and commonly disputed, likely consisting of multiple areas and categories however in this essay I will be focusing on semantic and episodic memory, as distinctive categories of memory. Jacinta presented with intense pruritus however her liver function tests and serum bile levels were initially normal. Many women will have pruritus for days or weeks before the development of any abnormal liver function (Kenyon et al 2001). Breaking Through The Foul And Ugly Mists Chiasmus In I Henry Iv Essay Example For Students

Breaking Through The Foul And Ugly Mists: Chiasmus In I Henry Iv Essay Breaking through the foul and ugly mists:Chiasmus in I Henry IVIn Shakespeares historic play King Henry the Fourth, Part One, the ingenious playwright uses an interesting and powerful method of presenting the honorable by introducing that character at the rock bottom of his potential and, as Hal puts it, breaking through the foul and ugly mists/ Of vapors that did seem to strangle him (I.ii, 155-6). Chiasmus, in Shakespeares plays, is the inversion of two characters reputation and personality traits. In I Henry IV this technique can be seen in the shifting of the readers perception of Harry Percy, more vividly known as Hotspur, and Hal, the Prince of Wales. Hotspur and Hal start out on two utterly opposite ends of the spectrum of honor and nobility. As the play progresses, we can witness Hals transcendence, turning point, and rise to the peak of his potential. We also are shown Hotspurs gradual dive to shame (and ultimately death) as he loses his temperance and patience, and is consu med by confidence and greed. The literary effect of chiasmus terminates with, once again, the characters on opposite ends of the spectrum, but somewhere along the shift, they cross paths and the original hierarchy is inverted. At the beginning of the play, Prince Hal starts out on the lower half of the hierarchy. He spends the majority of his time in the tavern, drinking away the money that he earns by robbing travelers during the night. He is introduced to the readers as immature, irresponsible, and ignorant to his destiny and potential. But Shakespeare doesnt let his readers see Hal this way for long: in I.ii, Hals intention of transcendence to princedom is evident in his revealing soliloquy:Yet herein will I imitate the sun,Who doth permit the base contagious cloudsTo smother up his beauty from the world,That when he please again to be himself,Being wanted he may be more wondered atBy breaking through the foul and ugly mistsOf vapors that did seem to strangle him. (150-6)Though Hal seems ignorant of his destiny and importance in the court, Shakespeare allows us to see that he intends to rise to his full potential. From this point on, Hal begins ridiculing his friends, and realizes that they are contagio us clouds who smother up his beauty. Harry Percy, a.k.a. Hotspur (Shakespeare never ceases to amuse me with his witty nicknames and this one is certainly derived from the Prince of Darkness himself), is introduced to us as the courtier of Golden Mean. He is nearly everything a prince should be: he valiantly captures the prisoners King Henry desires (even though he will not give them over to the king), he is courageous, quick with words, and has a goal of honor. In I.iii, 201-8, he expresses how much importance he places on honor and how simple he thinks it is to obtain it:By heavens, methinks it were an easy leapTo pluck bright honor from the pale-faced moon,Or dive into the bottom of the deep,Where fathom line could never touch the ground,And pluck up drowned honor by the locks,So he that doth redeem her thence might wearWithout corrival all her dignities; But out upon this half-faced fellowship! But even within this speech one of his faults is uncovered. Towards the end of this tang ent he is shaming the practice of sharing glory and honor with others. This reflects his egotistical intentions and his preoccupation with the obtaining the title of honor. In this scene we also learn of Hotspurs other downfalls: his exponential anger, his lack of temperance, stubbornness, and ignorance. He doesnt know his own history, he disregards letters warning him, and he is totally consumed with the idea of victory and honor; he even battles in his sleep. .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 , .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .postImageUrl , .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 , .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:hover , .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:visited , .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:active { border:0!important; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:active , .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63 .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubf13ae39ed0bb3ac537063ae59ae4b63:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Lessons of Life EssayScene II, act iv reflects Hals midway point. He has not yet risen to his full potential, but we know he intends to show his father that he is worthy of his title of the Prince of Wales. Hal and Falstaff put on a little play-within-a-play, in which Hal plays the part of his father, King Henry, and Falstaff acts as Prince Hal. King Henry (Hal) reprimands Prince Hal (Falstaff) for passing time in the tavern with Falstaff, that old white-bearded Satan (368-9). Prince Hal (Falstaff) pleads with the King not to banish Falstaff and Hals reply shows that he has the makings of nobility, whereas before they were absent. Falstaff: banish not thy Harrys company banish plump Jack, and banish all the world. Prince: I do, I will. (381-3)This passage is extremely compelling because it is so ambiguous. The line of Prince Hal (acting as King) is full of meaning, yet the meaning can be interpreted in a couple different ways, simply because of the roles that Falstaff and Hal are playing. We sense that Prince Hal means what he says in terms of his own banishment of Falstaff and the entire tavern realm because we already know of his intentions, but there is uncertainty due to the vagueness of his reply, and also the fact that he is not playing himself, he is acting as the king. Hal moves up another rung on the ladder to nobility when, in III.i, he persuades his father to trust him that he has changed. He states that he will kill Hotspur, much to King Henrys great pleasure, and he stuns his father with his economic, mercantilistic language, which Henry doesnt fully understand. This in the name of God I promise here,The which if He be pleased I shall perform,I do beseech Your Majesty may salveThe long-grown wounds of my intemperance. If not, the end of life cancels all bonds,And I will die a hundred thousand deathsEre break the smallest parcel of this vow. (153-9)After this statement of his intention and promise, it is clearly shown that the hierarchy in which Hal and Hotspur are arranged has flipped, and Prince Hal is the more honorable of the two. Throughout the play, we are shown increasingly more of Hotspurs negative traits, until it comes to the point that Shakespeares readers see him as more selfish and greedy than valiant and brave. In III.i, we are shown a Hotspur that behaves very selfishly when Mortimer deals out the land that Mortimer, Glendower, and Hotspur are to cover in their rebellion. And we also begin to see that all he can do is fight: in response to Glendowers claim of great academic and poetic accomplishments, Hotspur states that he would rather hear a dry wheel grate on the axletree (128) than mincing poetry. ?Tis like the forced gait of a shuffling nag (130-1). Hotspurs selfishness is displayed in its near entirety at the end of act V, scene iii, in his pre-battle speech, if we can give it so great a name. Previous to this speech, he has been very impatient and overconfident, anxious to get the battle rolling. This short statement before the battle sums up how low Hotspur has sunken on the hierarchy. Let each man do his best. And here draw IA sword, whose temper I intend to stainWith the best blood that I can meet withalIn the adventure of this perilous day. Now, Esperance! Percy! And set on. (92-6)He is fully engulfed in the thoughts of battle, but from what weve seen, he usually is. We have learned that the Harry Percy we met at the very beginning of the play is in no way who he proves to be. The real Harry Percy is selfish, overconfident, greedy, and seriously lacks control of his temper. We, as readers know that this hot-blooded character is going to be killed by Prince Hal himself. Now whos the valiant and courageous one? By the end of the play, the way Shakespeares readers see Prince Hal and Harry Percy have been completely switched. Hal, the former tavern dweller and robber has turned into the noble Prince of Wales, and deserves the title. He even respects the honor in his opponents (V.v, 30-31). Hal, Prince of Wales has earned the trust of his father by fulfilling his promise. In response and gratitude to Hals materialized promise, King Henry refers to his power as our power (V.v, 34). And where is the courtier of the Golden Mean ? Dead. And it certainly was not a noble death. Theres no better way to shame a person than to totally uproot their confidence. By the end of the play, Hotspur is not honorable, even in his own terms. Shakespeares use of chiasmus in I Henry IV lends a very interesting twist to the plot. And whats even more compelling is that within the play itself, Hal is using chiasmus as well when he intends to rise from his drunken, thieving status to the justified Prince of Wales. Shakespeares use of chiasmus works marvelously in persuading the reader to view Hal as honorable in the end. This should remind us all that we can always move up from where we currently are, and become all the more virtuous by doing so. .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 , .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .postImageUrl , .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 , .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:hover , .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:visited , .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:active { border:0!important; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:active , .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084 .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf0ee551cafa5c787a766f10332a81084:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Mother Teresa Essay PaperShakespeare Essays

The Time Traveller is a man impossible to sympathise with Essay Example

The Time Traveller is a man impossible to sympathise with Paper At the beginning of the time traveller What we first notice about the Time Travellers character is his intelligence: ` You must follow me carefully. I shall have to controvert one or two ideas that are almost universally accepted. These are his first words in the book. From the beginning, Wells straight away cleverly exemplifies his confidence, arrogance and intelligence in his speech, the three main components of his character. His confidence comes from this intelligence of which an example is: ` I intend to explore time. Is that clear? I was never more serious in my life. His confidence in his high intelligence results in him being extremely arrogant on occasions: -` But the problems of the world had to be mastered. There may be a connection between that of the Time Travellers character and that of. Kunno in The Machine Stops. It is possible that Wells may have used the idea of the reader thinking that the character is proud and arrogant, before realising there is more to him. Although the books were published in the late Victorian and early Edwardian, Wells may have used the basic outline of Kunnos character for the Time Traveller. Right through the book, the Time Travellers attitude is that he feels superior to anyone else: his guests, the Eloi and the Morlocks. Several times he describes the Eloi as children, both physically and in terms of intelligence. On one occasion he describes himself as ` like a schoolmaster among children , despite the fact that the Eloi are teaching him their language. This is also an example of irony, as they are teaching him, not him teaching them. However, the Time Travellers feeling of superiority fails to make him realise the ironic side of what he thinks. The Time Traveller feels that he is more intelligent and knowledgeable than his guests. In discussions with his guests he oozes confidence, helping him to put points forward, and speaks adding emphasis to certain phrases, by pausing, for example. An example of this is: ` Scientific People, proceeded the Time Traveller, after the pause required for the proper assimilation of this In the meetings between him and his guests, he is always the person always putting the points forward and deciding where the conversation goes: ` Can an instantaneous cube exist? Whenever one of his guests tries to challenge his dominance, the Time Traveller says something to put them back into their more subsidiary position in the discussion. An example of this is: ` said the Medical Man May I have them? (referring to flowers). `The Time Traveller hesitated. Then suddenly: Certainly not. This again reminds us of his confidence and attitude towards his guests. On several occasions the Time Traveller sees examples of the Morlocks ntelligence (their machinery, their attempts to trap him in both the forest and the pedestal) but does not take it in, because of his arrogance. Therefore, he never learns from his mistakes, and so repeats them. For example, when he goes into the dark wood inadequately armed, and nearly gets killed, he does not learn from this. Therefore, when he goes into the pedestal, a perfect place to become trapped in, and he only has a couple of matches, and nothing with which to light them. I was in the dark trapped. So the Morlocks thought. At that I chuckled gleefully But I had overlooked ne thing. The matches were of the abominable kind that only light on the box. On that occasion, it is also ironic that the Time Traveller ` could not help but laugh bitterly at (his) confidence. On the following page he becomes over-confident once more. In several places in the book, the Time Traveller is over-confident and under-pr epared, not just with the Morlocks. He never properly thought through what it would be like if the Time Machine worked. Despite the fact that he is meant to be an intelligent and logically thinking scientist, he never even considered what he should bring to e prepared for example, if the machine were to work. Therefore, it is ironic when he wishes that he had brought a camera with him, when he has travelled into the future. When he is ready to go, he has panicky, second thoughts ` I suppose a suicide who holds a pistol to his skull feels pretty much the same wonder at what will come next So for all his intelligence, confidence and knowledge, the Time Traveller lacks much common sense. He is therefore arrogant, over-confident and under-prepared going into new situations. This makes it difficult to sympathise with him when things start to go wrong. It is easy to see that the Time Traveller is intelligent, but he can become irritatingly smart. For example: ` I had a score of noun substantives at least at my command; and then I got onto demonstrative pronouns, and even the verb `to eat. ` My museum hypothesis was confirmed. This is pretentious; and it is probable that the reader is led to dislike the Time Traveller; so that when he gets into tricky situations, the reader is not meant to feel too much towards him. It is only halfway through he book that the reader can start sympathising with the Time Traveller. This is when more of his haracter is revealed; underneath the confidence and arrogance is a more agreeable side. Here he admits that he feels for Weena; and when she is gone, he is depressed. However, despite the fact that he likes her; she is described by him as physically `frail and `like a child. Also, intellectually, he treats her with disdain, and talks of her in a condescending manner, saying things such as ` I thought, rather foolishly that Weena might help me to interpret this. Although Wells has cleverly brought in the caring side of the Time Travellers character gradually, he has made the Time Traveller rrogant, over-confident and egotistical throughout the book. One of the best examples of this, after the other caring side of his character has properly been introduced, is when he goes into the wood. He believed at the time, that building a fire was ` n ingenious move for covering (his) retreat. Relying upon being able to light a fire is not the best protection, especially as several hundred Morlocks surrounded them at the time. It is also ironic when the Time Traveller laughs at the fire he has made, and walks away further into the wood, and further away from the little protection that he has. These examples show us that despite more of his character being revealed so that the reader can sympathise with him, he is still arrogant and over-confident, not realising what dangerous positions he is in. When Weena `dies the Time Traveller realises he likes her, and his affection for her is more openly indicated. For example: ` (her death) seemed an overwhelming calamity. His relationship with her previously had grown very gradually. When he saved her from drowning, in his usual condescending and intransigent way, he assumed that was it, and that there would be no proper friendship. Treating he Eloi race with his normal disdain, the Time Traveller expected that he would never be thanked for saving her, as he says: ` I had got to such a low estimation of her kind that I did not expect any gratitude from her. This reminds us again of his arrogance. The last example in the book of his affection for her is: ` But my story slips away from me as I speak of her. This shows, in a comment to his guests, that he is still thinking of her in an affectionate manner when she is gone. The two examples of his thoughts on their friendship (one at the beginning, one after Weena has gone), shows how much the friendship ad developed. Despite the two very different sides of his character, there are events that occur to link them. When the Time Traveller fights the Morlocks in the forest, and they are ` blinded by the raging fire, he is clearly enjoying the ` succulent giving of flesh under (his) blows, while in ` a frenzy of fear. The Time Traveller might want revenge for whatever has happened to Weena, but still lacks common sense, and ` not realising their blindness, he ` struck furiously at them. Although he instantly regrets this, which is, again, quite ironic. Furthermore, the different sides of his haracter can be linked when he is in the Palace of Green Porcelain. There he describes Weena as quite unintelligent, but two pages later, he almost praises her for making him realise that the floor sloped down underground towards the Morlocks. Here the Time Traveller treats the Elois intelligence with his usual disdain and condescension, but praises Weena, an Eloi, indicating that he likes her. The Time Traveller is not a very sympathetic character, but it is possible to sympathise with him. I believe it is definitely Wells intention to make the reader change his or her view about the Time Traveller, and to become more sympathetic towards him. Throughout the book, the Time Traveller is arrogant, over-confident and lacks common sense. Until his relationship with Weena begins, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to gain the readers sympathy. There are some subtle remarks made by the Time Traveller about his relationship with her, but he does not consciously realise that he likes her until her disappearance. Only then he actually realises her affection for her. Due to his continued arrogance, however, it is not possible to sympathise a great deal with him.

Important Cities in African-American History

Important Cities in African-American History African Americans have contributed tremendously to the culture of the United States. First brought to America hundreds of years ago to work as slaves, blacks won their freedom after the 19th century Civil War. However, many blacks remained very poor and moved throughout the country seeking better economic opportunities. Unfortunately, even after the Civil War, many white people still discriminated against blacks. Blacks and whites were segregated, and the education and living conditions of black people suffered. However, after several historic, sometimes tragic events, black people decided to no longer tolerate these injustices. Here are some of the most important cities in African-American history. Montgomery, Alabama In 1955, Rosa Parks, a seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama, refused to obey her bus driver’s order to surrender her seat to a white man. Parks was arrested for disorderly conduct. Martin Luther King Jr. led a boycott of the city bus system, which desegregated in 1956 when segregated buses were deemed unconstitutional. Rosa Parks became one of the most influential and famous female civil rights activists, and the Rosa Parks Library and Museum in Montgomery now displays her story. Little Rock, Arkansas In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were unconstitutional and that schools should soon integrate. However, in 1957, the governor of Arkansas ordered troops to forcibly prevent nine African American students from entering Little Rock Central High School. President Dwight Eisenhower learned of the harassment the students experienced and sent National Guard troops to aid the students. Several of the â€Å"Little Rock Nine† eventually graduated from high school.   Birmingham, Alabama Several important civil rights events occurred in 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama. In April, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and wrote his â€Å"Letter from a Birmingham Jail.† King argued that citizens have the moral duty to disobey unjust laws such as segregation and inequality. In May, law enforcement officers released police dogs and sprayed fire hoses on a crowd of peaceful protesters in Kelly Ingram Park. Images of the violence were displayed on television and shocked viewers. In September, the Ku Klux Klan bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and killed four innocent black girls. This particularly heinous crime incited riots across the country. Today, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute explains these events and other civil and human rights issues. Selma, Alabama Selma, Alabama is located about sixty miles west of Montgomery. On March 7, 1965, six hundred African American residents decided to march to Montgomery to peacefully protest voting registration rights. When they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge, law enforcement officers stopped them and abused them with clubs and tear gas. The incident on â€Å"Bloody Sunday† enraged President Lyndon Johnson, who ordered National Guard troops to protect the marchers as they successfully marched to Montgomery a few weeks later. President Johnson then signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Today, the National Voting Rights Museum is located in Selma, and the path of the marchers from Selma to Montgomery is a National Historic Trail. Greensboro, North Carolina On February 1, 1960, four African-American college students sat down at the â€Å"whites-only† restaurant counter of Woolworth’s Department Store in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were refused service, but for six months, despite harassment, the boys regularly returned to the restaurant and sat at the counter. This peaceful form of protest became known as a â€Å"sit-in.† Other people boycotted the restaurant and sales dropped. The restaurant was desegregated that summer and the students were finally served. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum is now located in Greensboro.   Memphis, Tennessee Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Memphis in 1968 to try to improve the working conditions of sanitation workers. On April 4, 1968, King stood on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel and was hit by a bullet fired by James Earl Ray. He died that night at the age of thirty-nine and is buried in Atlanta. The motel is now the home of the National Civil Rights Museum. Washington, D.C. Several crucial civil rights demonstrations have occurred in the capital of the United States. The best-known demonstration was probably the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963, when 300,000 people heard Martin Luther King give his I Have a Dream speech. Other Important Cities in Black History African-American culture and history are also displayed in countless more cities across the country. Harlem is a significant black community in New York City, the largest city in America. In the Midwest, blacks were influential in the history and culture of Detroit and Chicago. Black musicians such as Louis Armstrong helped make New Orleans famous for jazz music. Struggle for Racial Equality The civil rights movement of the 20th century awakened all Americans to the inhumane belief systems of racism and segregation. African-Americans continued to work hard, and many have become enormously successful. Colin Powell served as the United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, and Barack Obama became the 44th US President in 2009. America’s most important African-American cities will forever honor the courageous civil rights leaders who fought for respect and better lives for their families and neighbors.

Domestic terrorism and international terrorism Essay

Domestic terrorism and international terrorism - Essay Example These are their major source of finance to their activities. Internet has enhanced the occurrence of domestic terrorism, the internet has become a source of information enhancing the occurrence of identity theft which is used by terrorist group to engage in their criminal activities, information collected include individuals information, bank credit information and credit card information. The internet has also been used to lure innocent citizens into frauds where individuals are asked to pay for certain services or goods and as a result they are fraud off their money. The intervention which includes monitoring activities in the web by the authorities will be an effective way to counter terrorism. However this may result into leaking of organisations information that may lead to losses by these organisations. When there exists a monitoring device in the internet then there will be leaking of company information to its competitors or even to speculators which may lead to loss of funds. Therefore the best way to strike a balance is to monitor only suspicious information on the web mostly from regions that are suspected to have terrorist groups, there exist such monitoring systems but they were banned by the US government but the best would be to install a system that tracks conversations that include key words used by the terrorist groups. Organisational information therefore should not be monitored to avoid financial losses as a result of information leak. Therefore the federal should be empowered to monitor information regarding suspicious groups and not for the organisations. Funding of domestic terrorism Terrorist groups will involve themselves in criminal activities to fund their operations, they have an advantage in involving in criminal activity in that they gain finances and at the same time they endanger the societies that they target through these activities. The other reason is that the criminal activities the terrorist involve in are hard for the judicial system to solve and prove. Some of the criminal activities that terrorist will engage in include: Drug trafficking: Drug trafficking is an activity that the terrorist involve in order to finance their activities, initially the terrorist groups were funded by the soviet union but after its collapse drug trafficking become a major source of finance. Identity theft: Identity theft is one of the most recent means in which terrorist use to finance their activities, this has emerged with the emergence of the internet and computer software which have made it easier to retrieve peoples information, and this has enabled the terrorist to steal people's identity which have resulted to financial scams which provide finances to the terrorist groups. Cigarette smuggling This is also a means by which terrorist groups will use in gaining finances, cigarettes are smuggled from low tax regions to regions whereby individuals will buy large quantities of cigarettes

Business Models and Planning Chapter Questions Assignment

Business Models and Planning Chapter Questions - Assignment Example Typically, business models undergo significant adaptation to immediate business environments. This means that managers can employ an appropriate business model to counteract changes brought by actions of competitors and other market forces. Technically, business models strive towards maximizing profits by optimizing interrelatedness of production inputs. Practically, outcomes of adopting a given business model remains uncertain. Some model innovations may yield successful outcomes while others may lead to failure. Based on chapter 4 on business model innovation, it is undeniable that companies use different approaches in trying to increase profitability. Despite the immense competitive pressure exerted by active model innovations, most changes in those models are still radical as opposed to being specific2. In many cases, a firm may adopt a correct model but lacks technical framework of articulating the model’s principles into its marketing lines. One definite relation between model innovation and profitability features in the aspect of value proposition. Value proposition becomes instrumental whenever product and service firms understand essential behaviors of consumers in potential markets. All model innovation processes adopts the notion that value proposition plays a significant role in influencing consumers’ purchase decisions3. Inclusion of a concise and appealing proposition statement will not only attracts customers’ attention but also convince a new consumer into purchasing a product or service. In order to appreciate the importance of value proposition in marketing, one should acknowledge the influence exerted by service-profit chain. This chain establishes the relationship between customer satisfaction and profitability. Supposedly, model innovation aims at enhancing corporate profitability by addressing the needs of stakeholders, which in this context comprise

Job Order Costing :: essays research papers

Process costing is used for homogenous products (continuous flow processes such as producing cans of soda). Job-order costing is used in situations where the organization offers many different products or services, such as in furniture manufacturing, hospitals, and legal firms. Process costing is used where units of product are homogeneous, such as in flour milling or cement production. The purpose of a job order cost accounting system is to assign and accumulate costs for each job, i.e., an order, a contract, a unit of production, or a batch. Job order costing should be used if the production or service is being performed to meet customer specifications or requirements, if different components are made for inventory, or projects are undertaken to construct real property. Job order costing allows more control, less estimation, and more direct and reliable allocation of costs. . Differences between job-order and process costing. The differences between job-order and process costing occur because the flow of units in a process costing system is more or less continuous and the units are essentially indistinguishable from one another. Under process costing: a. A single homogenous product is produced on a continuous basis over a long period of time. This differs from job-order costing in which many different products may be produced in a single period. b. Total costs are accumulated by department, rather than by individual job. c. The department production report is the key document showing the accumulation and disposition of cost, rather than the job-cost sheet. B. Overview of Process Costing. Manufacturing costs are accumulated in processing departments in a process costing system. A processing department is any location in the organization where work is performed on a product and where materials, labor, and overhead costs are added to the product. Processing departments should also have two other features. First, the activity performed in the processing department should be essentially the same for all units that pass through the department.

Importance of Statistics

IMPORTANCE OF STATISTICS In today's world we are faced with situations everyday where statistics can be applied. Statistics can be used to determine the potential outcome of thousands of things where the human mind alone wouldn't be able to. Statistics benefits all of us because we are able to predict the future based on data we have previously gathered. Being able to predict the future not only changes our lifestyle but also helps us be more efficient and effective. Statistics is the science of collection, analysis, and presentation of data.Statisticians contribute to scientific enquiry by applying their knowledge to the design of surveys and experiments; the collection, processing, and analysis of data; and the interpretation of the results. Statisticians may apply their knowledge of statistical methods to a variety of subject areas, such as biology, economics, engineering, medicine, public health, psychology, marketing, education, and sports. Many economic, social, political, and military decisions cannot be made without statistical techniques, such as the design of experiments to gain federal approval of a newly manufactured drug.Statisticians provide crucial guidance in determining what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted. They often help search for clues to the solution of a scientific mystery and sometimes keep investigators from being misled by false impressions Why do we need to study statistics? There are five major reasons to study statistics: * The first reason is to be able to effectively conduct research. Without the use of statistics it would be very difficult to make decisions based on the data collected from a research project. For example, in the study cited in Chapter One, is the difference in recorded absenteeism between psychiatric and obstetrics nurses large enough to conclude that there is meaningful difference in absenteeism between the two units? There are two possibilities: The first possibility is that the diff erence between the two groups is a result of chance factors. In reality, the two jobs have approximately the same amount of absenteeism. The second possibility is that there is a real difference between the two units with the psychiatric unit being more nurses missing work.Without statistics we have no way of making an educated decision between the two possibilities. Statistics, however, provides us with a tool to make an educated decision. We will be able to decide which of the two possibilities is more likely to be true. We will base this decision on our knowledge of probability and inferential statistics. A second point about research should be made. It is extremely important for a researcher to know what statistics they want to use before they collect their data. Otherwise data might be collected that is uninterruptable.Unfortunately, when this happens it results in a loss of data, time, and money. Now many a student may by saying to themselves: â€Å"But I never plan on doing any research. † While you may never plan to be involved in research, it may find its way into your life. Certainly, it you decide to continue your education and work on a masters or doctoral degree, involvement in research will result from that decision. Secondly, more and more work places are conducting internal research or are becoming part of broader research studies. Thus, you may find yourself assigned to one of these studies. Finally, many classes on the undergraduate level may require you to conduct research (for example, a research methods or experimental psychology course). In each of these instances, a knowledge of measurements and statistics will be invaluable. * The second reason to study statistics is to be able to read journals. Most technical journals you will read contain some form of statistics. Usually, you will find them in something called the results section. Without an understanding of statistics, the information contained in this section will be meaningle ss.An understanding of basic statistics will provide you with the fundamental skills necessary to read and evaluate most results sections. The ability to extract meaning from journal articles and the ability to critically evaluate research from a statistical perspective are fundamental skills that will enhance your knowledge and understanding in related coursework. * The third reason is to further develop critical and analytic thinking skills. Most students completing high school and introductory undergraduate coursework have at their disposal a variety of critical thinking and analytic skills. The study of statistics will serve to enhance and further develop these skills. To do well in statistics one must develop and use formal logical thinking abilities that are both high level and creative. * The fourth reason to study statistics is to be an informed consumer. Like any other tool, statistics can be used or misused. Yes, it is true that some individuals do actively lie and mislead with statistics. More often, however, well meaning individuals unintentionally report erroneous statistical conclusions. If you know some of the basic statistical concepts, you will be in a better position to evaluate the information you have been given. The fifth reason to have a working knowledge of statistics is to know when you need to hire a statistician. Most of us know enough about our cars to know when to take it into the shop. Usually, we don't attempt the repair ourselves because we don't want to cause any irreparable damage. Also, we try to know enough to be able to carry on an intelligible conversation with the mechanic (or we take someone with us who can) to insure that we don't get a whole new engine (big bucks) when all we need is a new fuel filter (a few bucks). We should be the same way about hiring a statistician.Conducting research is time consuming and expensive. If you are in over your statistical head, it does not make sense to risk an entire project by attempt ing to compute the data analyses yourself. It is very east to compute incomplete or inappropriate statistical analysis of one's data. As with the mechanic discussed above, it is also important to have enough statistical savvy to be able to discuss your project and the data analyses you want computed with the statistician you hire. In other words, you want to be able to make sure that your statistician is on the right track. To summarize, the five reasons to study statistics are to be able to effectively conduct research, to be able to read and evaluate journal articles, to further develop critical thinking and analytic skills, to act as an informed consumer, and to know when you need to hire outside statistical help. How statistics are used in business areas Statistics clearly has real world applications in all of the subjects you list. * Accounting – Random sampling is frequently used by accounting firms when accounts (like travel expenses) are relatively small and inconseque ntial. You can use a random sample to estimate the quality of the whole population of accounts. * Finance – Trend analysis and correlation are common when making economic forecasts. * Management – Sampling of opinion polls and data pertaining to personnel. These are often summarized with estimates of errors. * Marketing – Customer surveys, correlations between advertising outlays and increased revenues. Estimates of market sizes use sampling. Product quality is also a rich field for statistical analysis. Any time you want a quick answer, you can get a good estimate by using statistical sampling. For example, a stratified random sample of accounts can be used instead of an exact calculation when you have paper sales orders (or pending sales orders) that are not entered into the computer. Make sure to count all the big ones, and you can estimate the small ones. On the other hand following ways, statistics can be possible to use in the business area. In general a typ ical organization has three levels: Strategic, Managerial and Oper- ational. This classi? cation is somewhat general and arbitrary. However, this can help identify and emphasize di? rent tools to be directed at the di? erent levels. We envision Statistics to play important roles at all these levels. Strategic Level (Top of an Organization) At the strategic level the most emphasis should be on Statistical thinking which Have the following components: * Notion of a Process, * Notion of measurement and data based decisions, * Understanding and dealing with variation, * Statistical tools, and * Systematic approach. The notion of process thinking is fundamental to any organizational change. Every action has some inputs and outputs which need to be identi? d in every context. Decisions at the strategic level should be based on facts supported by appropriate data and this requires an understanding of variation (Deming 1986). Business and Industry have seen the arrival and demise of many pr ograms such as Total Quality Management. Embracing any program that comes along without ? rm commitment and understanding is doomed to failure. Managerial Level (Middle Level) This is the level at which systems are devised for implementation of the directions taken by upper management. In particular, systems for robust product and pro- cess design, process control and improvement, and training are the responsibility of middle management. Understanding of some statistical tools and statistical thinking are prerequisites for those who are designing these systems. Operational Level At this level the methods are implemented through the system built at the mana- gerial level. Understanding of statistical tools such as control charting, capability analysis, design of experiments, measurement system analysis, regression analysis etc are essential.Appropriate statistical tools need to be used by operational peo- ple as part of their daily work. People in some areas need to know the details o nly of certain statistical tools. For instance, an operator responsible for maintaining stability of a process by charting should know the workings of a control chart but need not know a lot about design of experiments. On the other hand an engineer responsible for process improvement should be knowledgeable in several aspects of statistical process control and design of experiments. How entrepreneur minimizes the business risk By using following tools, am entrepreneur can minimize the business risk. Those are: * Business forecasting * Risk return analysis in portfolio and project management * Probability concept in manufacturing area and others Statistics are used all over the world. They can be applied in almost any situation and can always help. They are used in explaining group behavior of organisms, marketing research, and the list goes on and on. A good example is how scientists observe the behavior of groups of animals.Scientists can record data from a group of elephants and d etermine that a certain percentage of elephant herds will defend themselves from predators while the other percentage may run away. This kind of data can help scientists predict the elephant's lifestyle and culture. Statistics affects our daily life every day. Researchers use statistics to advertise their products which in turn we the consumer purchase. The price of the products we buy are determined upon statistics which show the demand for the product at that point in time and because of these statistics, we the consumers pay a certain amount of money to buy the product.Another example of how statistics affect me is in school. Every year statistics are looked over and the curriculums for the classes I take are based on data collected in the past. The curriculums are modified and help the learning process. In conclusion, statistics are a major staple of our world today. They are used in practically any situation and help improve our overall lifestyle. Statistics change the way we t hink about tomorrow and the way we live today and without them.

My Duty For Volunteering At Virginia Commonwealth...

Over the course of a month, I dedicated time to volunteer with agencies that focus on providing safe and productive programs for children. Stop Child Abuse Now also known as SCAN, focuses on stopping/preventing child abuse in homes. This agency teams with many different agencies around Richmond to help parents and children coop and learn way to avoid situations of abuse. My duty for volunteering was teaming with Virginia Commonwealth University Health Services and making SCAN a known organization throughout Richmond community. VCU threw a wellness block party that included many different health services but also gave members of the community to learn and seek help with many different organizations that were there promoting their business or organization. I sat with one other girl and passed out flyers and contact information to those who were interested in the organizations. I explained to individuals what the program was about and the benefits of the program. I had one particular in teraction with this young mother who explained she was in a situation where children were being abused and the authorities were notified and now she’s seeking counseling for her and the children involved. I and the other young lady volunteering with me were able to give her information on the program and also contact numbers to individuals that could help her situation. This young woman was very grateful and happy she found an organization that could assist her with her situation. From thisShow MoreRelatedStephen P. Robbins Timothy A. Lost Generation vs Beat Generation - 2771 Words

A Comparison between Ernest Hemingway and Jack Kerouac in Context of their Corresponding Literary Periods Introduction While reading Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road I have noticed that the author Ernest Hemingway is mentioned quite often in the book. This has raised my interest to focus my research on the following. For the purpose of this paper I would like to take a closer look at Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road, in context of the Beat Generation, in comparison to Ernest Hemingway, the leader of the Lost Generation. This paper tries to show the differences and the agreements between the two literary streams and how it influenced the two particular authors. Therefore, the paper starts with a definition of the Lost Generation and†¦show more content†¦Autobiographies were considered to be essential during the literary period of the 1920’s and as Philippe Lejeune claims,†the author, the narrator, and the protagonist must be identical† (Monk, 10). By means of this particular genre, those writers found a way to communicate with the mass audience (Monk 14). The authors of the Lost Generation even defined themselves by their autobiography and their involvement with each other, because they shared the same motives and their time of experience abroad. Those autobiogra phies functioned as a question of identity for Lost Generation writers, because they interpreted their existence as meaningless, after the war. Jack Kerouac’s novel On the road also shares some autobiographical aspects, because the narrator tells its own personal story, which is actually referring to the author himself; basically, Sal is a real-life person. The book’s content is based on real-life events of Jack Kerouac. The narrator somehow functions as an alter ego. In the novel, the narrator, Sal Paradise, a young dissatisfied man, who broke with communities and suffers from the depression of World War II, reflects the feelings of Jack Kerouac and simultaneously the ones of a whole generation. Both, this novel and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises stand for the mood and the feelings of their particular generation. Does One’S Feelings Reflect Upon The Actions That He Or

Does one’s feelings reflect upon the actions that he or she commits while one’s mind is overwhelmed with emotions? In Hamlet: The Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, Hamlet’s fourth soliloquy, â€Å"To be or not to be†¦Ã¢â‚¬ speech, is generally one of the most famous of those written for theatre. This speech, even a few hundred years later, is commonly known by individuals even if he or she does not know the play, Hamlet: The Prince of Denmark, itself. Throughout this essay, the soliloquy will be brought up in order to help determine the nature of Hamlet’s feelings throughout the whole play and whether or not his antic disposition is for real or just a fake act. In the play, Hamlet’s self-esteem is beginning to get really low, to the point†¦show more content†¦The opening of the soliloquy demonstrates how easy it is to stop living. This speech could be being said by Hamlet because he knows that the king and Polonius were watc hing or just another way to convince those in the castle that he was going crazy even to the point of suicide. When Hamlet enters into this soliloquy, he is so set on getting his father’s revenge that he is overwhelmed with emotions and feelings throughout his thoughts that he is thinking about suicide. He feels as if it is an easy way out of the torment that he has to encounter everyday by witnessing the King, Claudius who murdered his father, be the husband to his mother, Gertrude even after doing what he did to her husband. In the end, he decides to live, because he wants to live in peace in the afterlife. This sorrowful state that he is in, not only comes from his father’s death, but also from his mother remarriage only a few weeks after the death of her husband to Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, who is now the King of Denmark. This soliloquy spoken by Hamlet during this play worries some individuals with the concern over the concept on whether or not life is wort h living.
